Despite being one of the first varieties planted in Australia, arriving with the first fleets, Semillon is now revered as a new and niche variety. It’s sexy again. This is amusing given its 200 years plus association with our country and its old-world status as a noble variety. Its limits are endless, making wine styles from sparkling, dry white wine, full bodied whites to the most sought after sweet white Sauternes. All pricing in ranges from $15 per bottle to examples from the 1780’s that push millions.
At Bosward wines we are modest. Our 2025 shows how Semillon can adapt to climates. Barossa and its unique alluvial soils ask it to demonstrate its best.
Thank you to Cherie and Jim Boehm for their year of hard work, so we can start ours in a good way!
2025 in Barossa, was a generous and warmer year, so belying its natural suite of aromas and flavours the wines are a bit richer despite modest alcohol. We harvested earlier and its ’s a departure from the 2023 & 2024 but a great way to learn more about Boehm sites and viticulture.

Colour: Pure with a glint of green. Pristine.

Nose: Busy nose. The tangible and reliable citrus spectrum is ever present, although in the 2025 is a bit subdued by pith, bees wax and a kiss of kaffir leaves. It is a more complex wine. The 2023 and 2024 will age for a good while, 5 years would be better for aging the 2025.

Palate: With less rain than usual the 25 Sem has solid palate structure, with the fundamental ripe lime but with a minerally and saline aspect. A welcome but new inclusion is a streak of blood orange and negroni. In my opinion this represents the site. Dave Brookes said of the 2023 ‘thirst slaking’, he has more words than me so I hope he does not mind me pinching a few. I think that is an accurate assessment of what Jim Boehms vineyard and his alluvial pieces can achieve.
